Keyboards are used everywhere and by everyone using traditional computing platforms. PC gamers spending countless hours trying to defeat an evil dragon, nurses using computerized medicine delivery systems, and librarians all make use of keyboards on a daily basis. With a wide variety of different professions making use of this ubiquitous input device, why should there be only one standard design for everybody? It is this philosophy that has lead to an increased market for the custom keyboard.
Think about nurses working in the hospital. They come into contact with a wide variety of bio hazardous substances in any given second of their shifts. Some keyboards have been found to have nearly five times the amount of bacteria found on the average toilet seat. Imagine what is on the keyboards of hospital workers! By utilizing a washable rugged keyboard, hospitals gain an advantage against pathogens that may be hiding between the keys. Considering that a keyboard can harbor things like E. Coli and and staph, having a medical cart keyboard that is either hermetically sealed or washable can be an important weapon against sickness.
Further consider the environments found in hospitals. They are not always the best lit places to be working, especially on the night shift when a medicine pass needs to happen. In instances like this a custom keyboard can literally shine. Backlit keyboards utilize a light placed under the keys to make them easier to see in dark places. These illuminated keyboards can make life in a hospital a lot easier and much less prone to making typing errors; this could be important when considering all of the medical documentation each hospital uses.
A custom keyboard can make life safer, more convenient, and more fun. With a backlit, custom keyboard that is much more interesting to use you might not become bored enough to figure out that “typewriter” is the longest word that can be spelled using only one row of keys. Indeed, you will be too happy using it to accurately deliver medications or effectively smite your undead foes to worry about such a thing. Whatever your interaction with the computer, you can make it better by using a custom keyboard.

I work for a “luxury living center” which is to say a nursing home for people looking for a way to spend their money. Our hallways get pretty dark after 7pm yet we’re left to make do with the light from our laptop screens when giving meds.
We use a computerized system in the ER I work at too. Luckily we have custom keyboards that give off a really neat blue light that is pretty easy on the eyes. Very useful indeed. -NYNurse4Real
