Want Your Car to Arrive in One Piece? Three Things You Should Know about Car Shipping

Heavy equipment transportation

Did you know that thousands of Americans are buying cars online every year? Once you buy a car, of course, you need to have it shipped, often across the country. Driving across the country yourself would cost at least $2,200 in gas, making it a less feasible option for most people. Auto transport companies, of course, are the solution to this problem. If you bought a car online and need it transported soon, there are a few facts you should know about car transport services.

1. The Cost of Car Shipping

How much should you expect to pay? Not surprisingly, there is a wide range of prices you might receive as quotes for your car hauling. To give you a general idea, though, the average cost of getting a car from Chicago to Houston is $700. How can you get this price lower? If your car is shipped uncovered and with other cars, the price might go down. The weight, make, and route your car will take will all have an impact on the bottom line.

2. The Difference in Car Transport Companies

What many people fail to realize is that there are actually two types of companies that handle auto transportation. Car brokers arrange the transportation of your car by contacting multiple carriers, while car shippers handle your car the whole way through. Car shippers can be faster and consolidate responsibility to one company, but car brokers can often get you lower prices through competitive bidding.

3. Finding a Responsible Company to Handle Your Car Hauler Job

Nervous about having someone handle the vehicle you just paid several thousand dollars for, and wondering what standards are recognized? Look up auto transport reviews online. Although satisfied customers don’t always leave feedback, angry ones do. Every company is likely to have its faults but, for example, a company that consistently delivers late might matter more to someone who has a rental car for a limited period. You also want someone handling your car hauler job who is licensed and insured, so that you’re covered if someone happens. If you get an estimate that is way below industry average, that is often where less scrupulous companies are trying to cut corners.

  1. An interesting note, in 2012 Obama raised the minimum for a broker bond from $10,000 to $75,000. Although this was bad for shady businesses, its great for consumers. A lot of people took advantage of it previously.
